Rain is rare in February, making it one of the driest months of the year. The month is characterized by relatively calm wind conditions, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. This dry, sunny climate creates the ideal backdrop for walking tours, cultural outings, and picnics in one of the city’s many parks.

The city enjoys abundant sunshine during February, with clear or partly cloudy skies prevailing. The length of daylight increases throughout the month, starting at approximately 11 hours and 18 minutes on February 1st and reaching about 11 hours and 45 minutes by February 28th. Packing Tips for your February Trip to Mexico City

To make the most of your trip, pack strategically for Mexico City’s February weather. Here are some essentials:

  • Pic your clothes right. These temperature swings mean layering is your best friend—light clothes for the day and a jacket for the evening.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for city exploration. Sandals are not recommended, mornings and evenings can get chilly.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection.; even in cooler weather, the sun in Mexico City can be intense.
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and to avoid plastic waste.

Best plans at Mexico City in February

Celebrate Día de la Candelaria with Tamales

One of February’s highlights in Mexico City is the celebration of Día de la Candelaria on February 2nd. This tradition, deeply rooted in Mexican culture, marks the end of the holiday season. Originally a religious holiday tied to el Niño Dios (Baby Jesus) figurines, Candelaria has evolved into a heartwarming, food-filled gathering.

So nowadays, aside from the religious festivity, families and friends gather on the night of February 2nd to enjoy tamales—a culinary staple—alongside atole, a warm corn-based drink. If you’re lucky enough to be invited to a local celebration, don’t miss the chance to savor these comforting dishes.

Visitors can partake by seeking out tamales at local markets or traditional eateries. I recommend you to check out Café de Tacuba (kind of posh but still, highly traditional), Tamales Emporio (with plenty options for every taste), and my personal favorites, Tamales Santa Maria (amazing textures, delicious varieties and outstanding atole)

Explore Paseo de la Reforma on Muevete en Bici Sundays

Every Sunday, Paseo de la Reforma transforms into a cyclist and pedestrian paradise with Muevete en Bici. This recurring event invites locals and visitors to bike, skate, or walk along this iconic boulevard free of car traffic.

The route spans over 55 kilometers (34 miles), its main route crosses neighborhoods and landmarks such as Chapultepec, the Angel of Independence, and the Monument to the Revolution. But you are able to take a detour all the way to the southside of the city.

The lively atmosphere, complete with street performers and food vendors, makes this an unforgettable way to experience the city. Bike rentals are easy to find, and the activity is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Don’t forget your camera—Reforma offers stunning views of Mexico City’s architecture and vibrant urban life.

Visit Museums and Parks in the Perfect Weather

February’s mild climate makes it an excellent time to explore Mexico City’s cultural and natural gems. The city boasts over 150 museums, ranging from world-renowned institutions like the National Museum of Anthropology to quirky, lesser-known spots like the Soumaya Museum.

Parks are equally abundant, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets. Chapultepec Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world, is a must-visit. For a more local vibe, in this other article I wrote, you'll find some of my list for the best out-the-grid park options in CDMX. These green spaces are ideal for picnics, leisurely strolls, or simply soaking in the city’s relaxed side.

For a weekend cultural outing, consider San Ángel’s Bazaar, held every Saturday, or spending a Sunday morning at El Centro de Tlalpan. In both places, you’ll find handcrafted goods, art, and traditional snacks in picturesque colonial settings.

Dive into Outdoor Adventures

The dry, sunny days of February are perfect for outdoor exploration. From hiking in the nearby mountains to discovering the ancient canals of Xochimilco, there’s no shortage of adventures.

For a romantic twist, consider booking a tour of Xochimilco’s less touristy floating gardens, where you’ll experience the area’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Alternatively, explore the hidden trails and scenic views of the Desierto de los Leones National Park of La Marquesa National Park.

Both of them are just a short drive from the city and Sergio, our founder and senior guide, would be happy to arrange your personalized visit to those amazing places for you.

All in all, February in Mexico City offers a unique blend of pleasant weather, cultural festivities, and endless opportunities to explore. Whether you’re savoring tamales for Día de la Candelaria, biking down Paseo de la Reforma, or wandering through lush parks and historic museums, this month promises unforgettable memories.

So pack your bags, grab your sense of adventure, and discover all that our vibrant city has to offer.
